Mason stepped into his condo around eight that night, his stomach so empty he could hardly concentrate. The aroma of beef and spices slammed into him. He almost cried with relief.

Rhy came over and kissed him, but Mason was too famished to take any pleasure in it. “Is dinner ready? I haven’t eaten since breakfast.”

Giving him a quizzical look, Rhy took dinner out of the oven—two plates of pot roast with potatoes and carrots. He’d made this dish the first time the two had shared a meal together, and Mason would have thought it was terribly romantic if the hollow in his stomach combined with the scent of food didn’t make him feel like jumping out of his skin.

Without even taking off his suit jacket, Mason sat at the dining room table and dug in. As the urgency settled, he noticed the tulips and candlelight. With a sheepish smile, he turned back into a human being instead of a starving animal.

“Sorry, this is really sweet.” He stood and hung his jacket on the back of his chair, then leaned in to breathe the fruity fragrance of the pale coral blossoms before sitting back down. “The clients were so intent on finding a house, they didn’t even want to stop for lunch. The whole morning was a bust—they didn’t like any of the places on my mom’s list, so I had to up the price range.”

“But they found a place?”

“Yes, and stood over my shoulder as I wrote up the offer. They weren’t crazy about the fact that I was filling in for my mom. Treated me like a twelve-year-old, and I’m pretty sure I heard the husband call me a queer under his breath.” He shook his head. “But they offered full price, with no contingencies except an inspection, so I’m pretty sure it’ll be accepted. My mom can handle it from here on out.”

Rhy reached and grabbed his hand. “I’m sorry your day sucked.”

“Me too. But even after taxes, I made almost three thousand dollars today. Which kind of makes up for the clients I work with for months before they settle on a place.”

“You mean like me?”

Mason managed a smile. “In your case? To be honest, once that cabin sells, I’ll miss it. It’s where we met. Where we fell for each other.”

“Where we fucked for the first time.”

Mason quirked his lips into a crooked smile. “Oh, I see. That’s what the flowers and candles are about. You’re not trying to woo me, you’re trying to screw me.”

“Maybe both?” Rhy moved his chair closer and kissed him. “Let’s finish eating so we can move onto the nap portion of the evening.”

Mason squeezed Rhy’s hands. “Will you join me? I sleep better when you’re next to me.”

“Of course.”

After dinner, they stripped down to their boxer briefs and got into bed. Rhy spooned against Mason. “So what are you going to do with that three thousand dollars?”

“Probably go a little wild—pay my mortgage, buy some groceries. If there’s something left over, maybe even pay my cell phone bill.
